Viktor Upsets Tsonga

10/03/2009

Troicki, 23, advanced to his second ATP World Tour final after upsetting top seed and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 39 minutes on Saturday.  The pair first met at the 2008 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

World No. 33 Troicki dropped serve on three occasions, but overall this week he has held his service in 30 of 33 games.  The No. 2 Serbian, behind
Novak Djokovic, won 62 per cent of service points including five aces to reach his first ATP World Tour final since August 2008 at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington (l. to del Potro).  He improved 3-14 lifetime against Top 10 opponents and to a 28-23 season record (16-12 on hard courts).

"It was a great turnaround," said Troicki. "I didn't have any chances in the first set as Jo played really well.  Sometimes I didn't even see the ball.  In the second set I felt he dropped his level and I took my chances to eventually win the match.  It is a huge match for me, appearing in my second final.  I'll definitely give it my best shot to win my first title."
